Sarah & Miriam
This piece represents the union of shadow and light. In Judaism, there is power in changing your name. It is akin to changing your fate. I was named “Sarah” by my mother. Recently, I was empowered to take a second name, “Miriam”. This represents me embracing the wild, messy, and more unapologetic facets of myself.
This piece also illustrates my journey of reclaiming my sexuality & pleasure after experiencing childhood sexual abuse and sexual assault. I used sexual tools to create this piece: whips, floggers, hot wax, and other instruments. I wildly painted with my hands and reclaimed my relationship to sex through the canvas. When people experience sexual abuse or assault, it can change our sense of safety within our bodies, and also make it challenging to access joy and pleasure.
The process of freely experimenting and expressing my own wounds, fears, and pain upon the canvas—while also discovering a rhythm of safety and pleasure within my experience in painting—the textures of the wet acrylics upon my fingers, the sensations of wax dripping on the canvas—the adornment of the dark spots with swashes of golden hearts—was incredible empowering.
I also utilized beauty products, such as nail polish and lipstick, reclaiming these tools of beauty in a more freeing and expressive form. This piece speaks to themes of power and pleasure, and the ability of women to break free of limiting constructs to find more joy within their self-expression.
*18% of the profits from this piece will go towards the development of a healing arts center for children. As an art therapist in training, it is my mission to bring the healing power of art to as many children and adolescents as possible.
